May 19, 2009 Meghan McCain takes aim at GOP, Bristol Palin’s abstinence tour Posted: 09:25 AM ET From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney (CNN) — Meghan McCain again took aim at some leaders of her party Monday night, declaring the GOP is currently being hijacked by those trying “to make it more extreme.” In an interview on The Colbert Report on Comedy Central, the outspoken daughter of Arizona Sen. John McCain said the party needs to broaden its message as it struggles to regain power in the halls of Congress and eventually the White House. “I do believe the Republican Party can be a safe place for the gay community,” McCain said in the at-times lighthearted interview. “President Obama said that he was going to repeal ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ and I think me and a lot of other people are still waiting on that and the Democratic Party isn’t necessarily a better place for the gay community than the Republican Party is. McCain’s statements come only hours before Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele is set to tell party leaders during a speech in Washington that the GOP should focus on conservative principles and that, “The era of apologizing for Republican mistakes of the past is now officially over.” But during the interview with the faux-conservative Colbert, McCain suggested the party’s mantra of limited government does not conflict with more socially moderate principles. “If you go to the basic beliefs of the Republican party of keeping government out of your life, why can’t that include marriage?” she said. McCain also criticized the recent push from Bristol Palin — the 17-year-old daughter of former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin who gave birth last year to a baby boy — to promote abstinence among teenagers, calling it “not realistic for this generation. “I think we need to have sex education with condoms, birth control and etc, etc.,” McCain said. “I think that if the Republican Party says abstinence only is the only way to be then we’re going to lose a lot of young voters and I think I wouldn’t want to practice anything I didn’t preach.” “It can be a party for a 24 year-old pro-sex woman. It can be,” McCain also said.

Throughout JK Rowling’s spree of best-selling novels, a wide variety of fansites have sprung up, numbering in the thousands. Most fans, however, are devoted to two or three of the top HP fansites. 1. MuggleNet – - “Swish & click!” Definitely the largest and most popular one, MuggleNet was founded several years ago by Emerson Spartz and consists of news, editorials and encyclopedial information on the books. It also features the Chamber of Secrets Forums, fanfiction and an RPG. Its podcast, MuggleCast, has been listened to regularly by millions of Internet users. Recently, the site has undergone intense commercialization, generating hundreds of thousands of dollars of advertising revenue each year, much of which goes to its founder, who does little to support the site now and has lost his interest in Harry Potter, sadly. The site has received an award from JK Rowling. 2. The Leaky Cauldron – the-leaky– “The most trusted name in Potter” The second largest and second most popular HP fansite, British-based The Leaky Cauldron exhibits a nice, clean design and functions with a team of dedicated volunteers. It has news, an image/video gallery, editorials, encyclopedial information, a podcast (PotterCast), a discussion forum (Leaky Lounge) and an essay project called Scribbulus. The webmaster is Melissa Anelli, who has spoken to JK Rowling on a few occasions. The website has received a fansite award from JK Rowling, who says it is her “favourite fansite”. 3. Veritaserum – - “Let the truth be told!” Veritaserum is a lovely website, founded by 18 year-old Matthew Vines, with a deliciously easy, navigable, friendly, interesting interface. It has the usual features: forum, news, info, images, videos, etc. 4. HPANA – Harry Potter Automatic News Aggregator – Although HPANA functions mainly as a super-fast news aggregating service, they have a very large, active forum and have received a fansite award from JK Rowling. It was founded by Jeff Guillame in 2002 and was the first HP fansite Jo ever visited. 5. Harry Potter’s Page – - “Feed your Potter addiction!” This website definitely has the best motto (see above), but also, a wide variety of other good attributes. It has a nice design, regularly updates with news and is one of the older Potter fansites, dating from December 2001. It also has a podcast. 6. Snitchseeker – A fairly large fansite, that’s very alive despite its dodgy design. It has one of the largest forums out there, and has a reputation for delivering startlingly quick pieces of Harry Potter news before anyone else. 7. Potterish – The second-largest Brazilian fansite, in Portuguese. It has one of the quaintest and most endearing designs that makes you wish you could speak Portuguese. The site has been praised by JK Rowling, and awarded a fansite award “… in appreciation of your style, your Potter-expertise and your responsible reporting” 8. The Harry Potter Lexicon – The HP Lexicon, founded by school librarian Steve Vander Ark, is arguable the biggest HP encyclopaedia on the Net. It details spells, characters, creatures, potions and places all to do with the HP universe. It created the first timeline of all events in the series. JK Rowling, on awarding it her Fansite Award, said “This is such a great site that I have been known to sneak into an internet cafe while out writing and check a fact rather than go into a bookshop and buy a copy of Harry Potter (which is embarrassing). A website for the dangerously obsessive; my natural home.” Recently, JK Rowling & Warner Brothers sued the Lexicon and RDR Books, who were collaborating to produce a book version of the site. They won on September 8th, 2008. Nevertheless, although the site’s relations with the author they adore have been ruined forever, it remains the most incredible source of collated HP information on absolutely everything within that universe. 9. Harry Potter Fan Zone – This Australian-based fansite was founded by Andy McCray in 2003. The largest fansite in the Southern Hemisphere, JK Rowling has said: “How could I not love a fansite whose contributors include people named Thaddeus and Aunna? This is a great Australian site with an impressively young staff who have produced some really insightful editorials; I wish I could highlight a couple of them, but that would be waaaay too revealing.” The site has received a Fansite Award from her. 10. Fictionalley – - “Creativity is magic” Fictionally is the largest collection of Potter fan fiction on the web. It also has quite a significant amount of fan art. They have four fanfiction “houses” – Ridiculous for humor fics, Astronomy Tower for romance fics, The Dark Arts for dramas, angst, mysteries and everything else, and Schnoogle for novel length fanfics. It was started by a group of fans a few years ago and is not for profit.

Unlike past seasons where minimalist clothes demanded that one goes sans jewelry, this seasons looks are best highlighted with statement pieces. Timeless pieces that turn heads and go with simple clothes in black, or rich colors. Hey, you can even wear with spring and summer’s lightweight dresses to add oomph to your look.

For starters, costume jewelry is back. With a vengeance. One can only go so far with precious gemstones. Even if you could afford statement jewelry items with giant diamonds or rubies, you would be a walking temptation to robbers, even in broad daylight. Who wants to get mugged?

Even the very wealthy with stashes of priceless jewelry would keep the real items in a safe and wear imitations of their jewels in public.

1. Trend #1 Stunning Necklaces

The best thing about these imitations is that they are very affordable. You could dress like a millionairess even if you are on a tight budget. Just accessorize your new gown or little black dress with an absolutely stunning necklace

Crystals are everywhere in the full spectrum of color. What better way to bring life to a structured dress with little detail than to accessorize it with brightly colored rocks. Especially dazzling stones around your neck.

2. Trend #2 Cuff Bracelets

Cuff bracelets are statement jewels that turn a simple sheathe into a stunning outfit. Your little black sleeveless dress or strapless gown looks even more amazing with the addition of a single cuff bracelet. They are timeless classics that are hot every season, which makes them excellent investments.

One statement accessory is enough. A small collection of statement jewelry is all you need to create your signature look. Wear one item at a time with your favourite dress. A change of accessories freshens your look instantly.

Now is the time to collect statement jewelry to create your signature look. Take advantage of this season’s offerings to build up your jewelry wardrobe.

Kids Wii Games are among the top-selling items for kids this year, and are sure to be a hit during the Christmas season 2008 and well into 2009.

However, it’s important to know before you buy – not only what are the most popular kids wii games, but which ones are appropriate for children of various ages?

Here is a list of Kids Wii Games that are not only sure to be a hit, but are also appropriate for little ears and eyes:

1. Nintendo Mario Kart for Wii – This is the most recent “Mario” game to be released, and already kids everywhere love it. It comes with the Wii Wheel, which when coupled with the Wii Remote makes a real steering wheel that is motion sensitive and easy to play games with. It also makes for more realistic driving and is a must for this game. With Nintendo Mario Kart for Wii, Players actively help out Mario and his friends race on the various racetracks that come with the game, as well as compete in an arena setting. Great fun for kids, and it’s appropriate for kids of all ages.

2. Lego Star Wars for Wii – The Complete Saga – This game is rated “E-10″, for kids 10 and older. It’s a Star Wars game that allows players to play through every single Star Wars Episode (movie) – but it’s played with Lego characters. That element doesn’t detract from the from the excitement of it, but it most definitely adds a level of amusement. (There aren’t many things that are funnier to see than a group of Lego/Star Wars characters battling each other out – good vs. evil!) This game is great for kids, but as mentioned above is specifically for kids 10 and older due to some mild violence in the game.

3. Super Mario Galaxy on Wii – Mario hits the galaxy and shoots from planet to planet in order to gather the precious stars that will save the lovely Princess Peach from Bowser – the familiar “evil” character in the Mario series of games. This particular Wii game has been one of the most popular for over a year, and continues to be loved by kids everywhere. It is appropriate for kids of all ages.

4. Nintendo Wii Play With Remote – This Wii game is just as popular with adults as it is with kids, but has gained it’s ranking as one of the most popular games for kids in 2008 & 2009. The series of games with the Nintendo Wii Play with Remote is more along the lines of traditional (“old time”) video games, with with a modern twist of excellent graphics and a few new more modern games tossed in for fun. Even though the games are more traditional, they are certainly not lacking in fun, and will keep entire families entertained and playing with each other for hours at a time.

5. Active Life Outdoor Challenge for Wii – This is one of the newer games for Wii, and is designed specifically to get people off the couch and actively participating physically in the games. Active Life Outdoor Challenge is normally packed with it’s own mat, which is used to stand, sit, jump, etc. on while braving the rapids in a kayak, jumping logs and more very active outdoor activities – all from the living room in your home. Appropriate for kids of all ages.

If you’re looking for Kids Wii Games that are sure to be a hit, any of the above are a safe bet and will very likely be a huge hit with kids to keep them having fun for a long time down the road.

First, something for nothing! I love mp3′s, mainly for their file size and convenience. Consequently, I scour the net for the best free downloads, and have created my own unique “Top 99 Free mp3 Downloads” report that you can ONLY get from my website, by following the link at the foot of the page.

Absolutely free, of course!

And, I’m a big fan of buying cheap rather than expensive, as long as the quality is up to snuff, whenever possible. For that reason , this article will highlight some more factors to consider when you are thinking about whether to buy a cheap mp3 player.

As discussed in the previous article about how to buy a cheap mp3 player, it is now possible and feasible to purchase such a product directly from the manufacturer online.

This is one option open to anyone looking to buy a cheap mp3 player online, and a pretty valid one nowadays. The overall quality of mp3 players coming from the Far East has improved immeasurably over the past few years and cheaper Asian players are no longer the risk that they perhaps once were.

However, before looking in depth at exactly what buying online in this manner entails, and some of the pros and cons of trying to buy a cheap mp3 player online, I want to deal with one other option for buying a player on a budget.

Have you given any thought to buying a used mp3 player, rather than a brand new one?

If so, this article will “join all the dots” for you!

If not, you perhaps should do, as it may have some advantages over trying to buy a cheap mp3 player that is brand new.

You would be able to purchase a branded machine for considerably less than you would have to pay in the local mall. The price of a used branded player would almost certainly fall within the budget of people looking to buy cheap mp3 players, and, if you were willing to buy a machine that is a couple of years old, then the price could be very attractive indeed.

And, of course, it’s a brand name, with all of the cachet attached to owning branded goods!

Moreover, if you buy from a reputable dealer, then there is a very good chance that the used branded player will be refurbished or refitted as well. Consequently, you would know that it is in good working condition, at least when it left the shop.

Thus, if you are looking to buy a cheap mp3 player, this is one course of action that you could certainly justifiably follow.

Indeed, not all that long ago, before the manufacturers of cheap mp3 players set about improving the quality and reliability of their products, this might have been the best cheap mp3 player option.

Compare the mp3 market to the car market, and you will see a clear parallel.

Not so many years ago, when choosing between a three year old Japanese car or a brand new Korean built automobile, I guess that 99% of people would have bought Honda or Toyota..

Now, Korean cars are almost universally seen as reliable, practical and good value for money (if a little bland). I would speculate that, asked a similar question now, you average savvy car buyer might take a different view to that of the not so distant past.

A savvy shopper thinking about buying a cheap mp3 player is in the same situation.

The quality of the cheaper products in the market has improved amazingly over the past few years, and literally continues to do so a little bit more every day.

Nowadays, to buy a cheap mp3 player does not mean that you have to compromise on quality and reliability in quite the same way as you used to.

In fact, as a long time Asia resident, I can tell you from personal experience that many of the branded machines that you can buy in the local mall are actually manufactured in the very same factories as the cheap mp3 players which the company sell under their own brand name for a fraction of the price!

Thus, there is absolutely no reason why deciding to buy a cheap mp3 player is a poor, or a second, choice. The quality is excellent and ever improving, the value for money factor is beyond question, and usually even cheap p3 players bought online come with a one year warranty.

On the other hand, a used machine is likely to enjoy a very short warranty period (3 months is the norm) if it has one at all. And, no matter how well it has been reconditioned, the fact remains that a percentage of its usable life (perhaps a significant percentage) has already past, and the machine will inevitable carry some wear and tear.

Even a more expensive branded solid state player (i.e. one with no moving parts) cannot entirely escape the inevitable ravages of passing time.

On the other hand, buy a cheap mp3 player that is brand new, an you know that there is absolutely no chance that anything is worn, and that any faults that do show themselves will inevitably be manufacturing defects, covered by the warranty.

Of course, the one thing that you inevitably lose if you do opt to buy a cheap mp3 player from a little known manufacturer is that your player is not “cool”.

Me, I can handle that! Give me a “non-cool” cheap mp3 player that is going to run like clockwork or many years than a second-hand player that carries a fashionable name, which unfortunately dies on me a few months after I buy it.

In my view, that is a classic case of what is known as a false economy!

But, one final thought on buying a used mp3 player. If you are seriously convinced that only a brand name product will do it for you, then check out the online auction sites like ebay.com. They almost always have sellers looking to get rid of brand name players at pretty good prices, and it is even possible from time to time to get them almost brand new, still with a good warranty period.

My view, however, is still buy a cheap mp3 player from a non-branded manufacturer, brand new. More on exactly how to go about this in the next article.

So what is it exactly that distinguishes the good comedy films from the great? Is it their ability to endure, the way their humor creeps up on you or takes you by surprise? Maybe it’s a great script, perfect timing or one-liners that hit the mark every time? Whatever it is, great comedy films leave a lasting impression and have an ability to engage us. They allow us to lower our defenses and share in the joy and the pain of the characters, as we identify with their situations. Ultimately, truly great comedy allows us to laugh at ourselves.

10. There’s Something About Mary

Arguably the best Farrelly brothers movie to date, they take a story about stalkers and turn it into a comedy. Ted Stroehmann (Ben Stiller) still longs for his prom date Mary Jensen (Cameron Diaz) years after losing track of her following an unfortunate accident on prom night. He eventually decides to hire a private detective to track her down, the only problem being, that the private detective falls in love with her too. Seems like Mary is every man’s dream girl. This movie produced many classic scenes, some you have to see to believe.

9. Airplane!

Considered by many to be the classic slapstick comedy. Airplane! tells the story of Ted Striker, who has never been able to fly a plane since an “incident” in the war. Striker is forced into action when a mysterious disease (don’t order the fish) knocks out the crew. Airplane! is so jam-packed with jokes you’ll need to see it a few times to catch them all.

8. Meet the Parents

This movie takes a potentially awkward situation that most people can relate to and takes it to the extreme. Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) tries to impress his girlfriends parents, but the father-in-law to be (played by Robert De Niro) is an ex CIA agent and is very mistrusting of Greg. Everything Greg tries to do ends up with disastrous consequences from losing the families cat, to giving his future sister-in-law a black eye. You can’t help but cringe and laugh at the same time at Greg’s misfortunes.

7. Blades of Glory

Following a fight at a medal awards ceremony, champion skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) are banned from competitive skating for life. Years pass and circumstances bring them together for another chance at the podium, but this time in the “men’s doubles”. The story follows their hilarious preparations for the event; all-the-while dogged by attempts from the brother/sister pairs team of the Van Waldenbergs to sabotage their efforts.

6. Coming to America

One of the last great Eddie Murphy movies before his return in the late 90s. Coming to America tells the story of Prince Akeem (Murphy) coming to America to find himself a wife who will love him for who he is after rejecting the idea of an arranged marriage. A fish out of water story, Akeem can’t help but act with dignity even when working at the local fast food restaurant. He soon finds the women of his dreams but will she love him when she discovers he is a Prince from a far away land? A great story with very funny scenes and lots of cameos to look out for.

5. Borat

The story centers on Borat, the Kazakhstani reporter sent to the US to prepare a report for the benefit of his countrymen back home. Things don’t quite go according to plan as Borat falls madly in love with Pamela Anderson after seeing her in Baywatch. Borat decides to go to California to meet and marry her and encountering all sorts of people and situations along the way. Told in classic road trip style, the many adventures of Borat are sometimes crude, but often hilarious at the same time. The most amazing thing is that Borat is taken at face value by virtually everyone he meets with hilarious and sometimes jaw-dropping results.

4. This is Spinal Tap

This is the classic “rockumentary” – a spoof of so many other on-the-road, rock ‘n roll documentaries. It tells the story of Spinal Tap, a washed up British rock band returning to the US for another tour. What we end up with is a hilarious send-up and sometimes a biting commentary on the rock ‘n roll world. The band goes through inevitable ups and downs through their tour after their latest album cover is deemed too racy and is completely blacked out. The band breaks up only to reform (in typical rock and roll fashion) and to make more money on yet another tour.

3. Groundhog Day

Phil Conners (Bill Murray) somehow gets stuck replaying the same day over and over again… Groundhog Day. Like most people, at first it seems like fun, but after reliving the same day 100s of times, Phil becomes suicidal and tries to take his own life. After finding out he can’t die, he tries every conceivable way to kill himself. He eventually realizes this is pointless and starts to learn about the people and the town he’s stuck in and falls in love with his producer, Rita (Andie McDowell).

2. Sleeper

During a routine operation Miles Monroe (Woody Allen) is cryogenically frozen and then brought back to life 200 years later. The future looks bleak and is controlled by a big brother like government headed by “the Leader”. Monroe ends up joining the underground resistance with hilarious consequences. Perhaps the most memorable scene in the movie is when Miles “disguises” himself as an android. This film is noted for its more visual and slapstick gags than many of Woody Allens’s later movies.

1. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Considered by many to be Monty Python’s finest work, the Holy Grail retells the classic story of King Arthur, but does away with most of the classic story. Instead, the king searches for knights to come to Camelot with him; along the way God appears to tell them to search for the Holy Grail. Their noble quest sees the majority of the knights killed off in funny ways until only two make it to the end. What happens there is one of the funniest and most absurd scenes ever filmed.
